  1. 1.  Mahlon Alvin MitchellMahlon Alvin Mitchell was born on 18 Aug 1883 in Sweden, Potter Co., Pennsylvania, USA; died on 08 Oct 1971 in Andover, Allegany Co., New York, USA.

From: Gerry Lynn Hamilton, General Manager, Collegian Inc. (

Mahlon Alvin Mitchell grew up in Potter County, where he also spent his young adult years. He married Rose Byam in August 1918 and registered for the draft a month later. His 1918 draft registration and the 1920 census show that he was living in Annin Township, McKean County. He worked
    as a self-employed blacksmith (1910, 1918, 1920, 1930).

In 2009, Luella Mae (Mitchell) Hamilton spoke about memories of Mahlon. She said his wife was a talker, but Mahlon was quiet: "He was nice and gentle." Luella said Mahlon and Rose often visited the Carl and Ettabell Mitchell home on Ross Glad, Coudersport, and they would stay overnight sometimes. Carl and Mahlon were brothers, and Carl and Etta were Luella's parents. Luella said Mahlon was the only one of Carl's siblings to visit often.

Mahlon is a common name in the Mitchell family. The 1920 census lists his middle initial as M. However, he signed his draft registration as Mahlon Alvin Mitchell. The signature seems to be the more authoritative source.

His draft registration also lists his birth year as 1882, but the image is not particularly good. If the registration card image is accurate, the draft registration official could have written the wrong year. All other availabluments list the birth year as 1883. These include the Ron Bruce chart, Mahlon's obituary, his father's pension information form, the Social Security Death Index and the 1900 census. The other census documents are consistent with a birth year of 1883/4.

The census reports present a mystery. The 1920 census report for the Mahlon Mitchell household lists a son, Charles Mitchell, age 18, born in Pennsylvania. The birth year for Charles would be 1901/2, when Mahlon was about 18. There is no otndication that Mahlon had a son. Mahlon was living with his parents in 1900 and 1910, and both census reports list him as single.

His wife Rosalie had a daughter Mabel before she married Mahlon in 1918. Using search, this Rosalie can not be identified in the 1910 census, and there is no combination of Rosalie (Rose, Rosa, Rosalee)
with a son Charles born 1901/2. There is no Charles Mitchell in the 1920 and 1930 census reports. Rosalie's first married name may have been Hotchkiss, and there is also no census record of this Charles Hotchkiss.

Conceivably, Charles was an adopted son. The same 1920 census report lists Carrie V. Mitchell as a 6-year-old daughter. Carrie was adopted, which is shown by the 1930 census report. In 2008, Luella said Carrie was
adopted. During a conversation in 2009, Luella did not know anything about Charles or whether Mahlon had been married earlier.

See the Rosalie Byam entry for more information about her first marriage,
Mahlon's obituary lists a daughter Phyllis Brownell. Luella said Phyllis was the daughter of Carrie and "Carrie died when Phyllis was born." Luella said Mahlon and Rose raised Phyllis, who later married a Brownell. Luella could not remembe name of Carrie's husband.

Luella did remember when Mahlon, Rose and Carrie visited Ross Glen in Coudersport, and Carrie brought a tall boyfriend. Luella said the boyfriend sang while someone -- maybe Carrie -- played the piano. Luella said she thought the boyfriend't name might be Star. Luella thought this visit was some years before Carrie married. [The 1930 census shows that Elmer L. Starr of Kane was born about 1914, which is about the same age as Carrie. He was the only male Starr listed in McKean County with a birth year ranging from 1908 to 1918. There were no Starrs listed in Potter County.]
