- Dansville - Ramous Steffy, one of our most respected citizens, died at his home on Perine Street at seven o'clock Sunday morning at the age of 78 years and 28 days. He was born in McGunzie [Macungie] Township, Lehigh Co., Pa., April 27th, 1812, and came to this state sixty-one year ago, settling in Sparta where in 1836 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Hamsher, Rev. Adam Beyer performing the marriage ceremony. He purchased a farm at an early day, prospered, was elected to office, for twenty-one years holding the office of highway commissioner, and finally, in 1869, moving to this village where he has since lived. After coming here, he was once or twice elected highway commissioner, and wherever given a public trust he discharged his duties with fidelity. In 1878 he sold his farm to Joseph Hamsher and put part of the proceeds, about $2200, in the First National Bank, expecting to be able to live comfortably for some years, but the collapse of the bank ruined him as it did many others, and he at once fell into a state of despondency from which he never recovered. Having a rugged constitution, he bid fair to live to a good old age, but the loss of his hard-earned money was more than he could bear, and he became a wreck because of the rascality of those whom he trusted as friends. He was an uncompromising Democrat, and we believe never voted any other ticket in his life, an honest, upright man, who never did a wrong and his death is deeply regretted. His widow and five children survive, and they extend thanks to neighbors and friends for favors shown during his sickness and after his death. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church yesterday morning." (The Dansville Express, Thursday, May 29, 1890)
