- It is believed by some that John's father is Ralph Prescott, of Shevington,England, if this if the case, then John is a descendant of King Alfred "the Great" of England, and other nobility. What is known about John is that he was born in Standish Parish in the county of Lancashire about 1604. His wife's madian name "Gawkroger or Platts", it is believed Gawkroger means "left-handed" or left-handed Roger. There was probably Roger Platts, who was left handed or gawky. In 1638, John was living on the Island of Barbadoes, owing more than ten acres of land on the Island. In 1640, he came to New England, settled for a time in Watertown, where he had large grants of land allotted to him. In 1643 he associated himself with Thomas King and others, for the purpose of purchasing of Sholan, the Indian Sachem of the Nashaway plantation," afterwards, Lancaster,MA. He was one of the original settlers and considered the founder. The town recived its name May 18,1653, the name it is said, being given in honor of Mr. Prescott, it being the name of his native county in England. After the completion of his corn mill, he took up his residence near it, and the site of his garrison house has been heretofore noted as near the southeast corner of High and Water Street, in Clinton,MA. At the time of his death, he was possessed of about 700 acres,(now Ayer,MA) to his son Jonas. Three hundred acres of this estate lay about the Washacum Ponds, including the Sterling camp-grounds; he owned nearly all the land upon which the factories and most densely populated streets of Clinton are located, and one hundred acres in South Lancaster, stretching from the summit of George Hill to the meeting of the rivers. The foot stones which bore the dates at their graves had crumbled away before anyone had noted the dates and made a record of them.
