The Anniversary of Mrs. Susan L. Stewart Who Has Spent Her Entire Life of Ninety Years in Howard.—Retains Her Faculties to a Remarkable Degree.
To have lived continuously in one town for ninety years is a record that few have attained, or will attain, for that matter, but it is exactly what Mrs. Susan L. Stewart has done. Mrs. Stewart's birthday anniversary was celebrated on Wednesday, February 3, There was a family and neighborhood gathering and the occasion was also noteworthy from the fact that her sister, Mrs. Sarah Stewart, 89 years old, was present as was also Mrs. W. T. Preston, another relative, who was 74 years old Thursday. Mrs. Stewart retains her faculties to a remarkable degree. Her sight is good, and her hearing is unimpaired. She is the daughter of Rev. Adonijah Ford who has gone to his reward and rest. She was born in the town of Howard near Smith's Pond February 3, 1819. She taught school at Smith's Pond in 1836 and 1837 and received the salary of $1.00 a week for her services. According to the then prevalent custom she "boarded round." In those days the purchasing power of money was less than now. Calico cost from 35c to 40c a yard. All necessities of life were higher than at present.
Sixty Years of Married Life. She was married to William Stewart January 8, 1838, and in 1898 they celebrated their 60th anniversary of their wedding. - DIED AT THE AGE OF NINETY-EIGHT
Mrs. Susan L. Stewart, one of the oldest residents of Steuben County.
She was a native of the Town of Howard and was born in the year 1819--Was widely known throughout this section and retained here mental and physcial faculties up to within a few months of her death,
Mrs. Susan L. Stewart died on Friday, November 2, at the home in the town of Howard a few miles from this village, after a brief illness from the gradual cooling of the vital fires. She was one of the best known and most respected residents of Steuben county, and up to within a short time of her death it was believed that she would pass the century mark. She retained unusual mental and physcial activity until a few weeks ago when her health began to fail, and she gradually passed from her long life of ninety-eight years into the great beyond.
She was born in the town of Howard near Smith's Pond, Feb 3, 1819, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Adonijah Ford who settled in Howard in 1813. She attended school in Howard Academy and later she taught school for $1.00 a week and her board. In recent years she related many interesting reminiscenses of the high cost of living in the early times, calico being 40 to 50 cents a yard when she was a girl, and any other things eauially high.
On Jan 8, 1838 she was united in marriage to William Stewart and to this 13 chidlren were born of whom 8 survive: Mrs. Matilda Taylor with whom she resided; Samual E. Stewart, Mrs. Susan I. Burns, Mrs. Olive A. Gulliver, Mrs. Fanetta F. Hooey, all of the town of Howard; William F. Stewwart and James Hall Stewart of Canisteo village; Almeron Stewart of Addison, also 27 grand children and 36 great-grand children.
She united with th Baptist church at an early age and had been a faithful member until her death. Her father conducted the first religous service ever held in the town of Howard.
The funeral was held from her late residence on Monday at 1 o'clock p.m. and from the Sherer church at 2 p.m. Rev. C. S. Roush, pastor of the Canisteo Baptist church officiating. The bearers were her grandsons, as follows: Dr. H. J. Stewart, Dr. O. K. Stewart, John Burns, Robert Hooey, Guy Stewart, Leon Gulliver. The funeral was very largely attended, there being a general outpouring of people to pay their last respects to theitr aged departed citizen. The floral tributes were profuse.

- The funeral of Mrs. Susan Stewart, wife of the late Dr. William Stewart was held at Sherer M. E. church, Nov. 5th, at two p. m., Rev. Rausch of Canisteo officiating. Burial in Shearer cemetery. The funeral was an unusually large one. Mrs. Stewart only lacked 15 months of being 100 years of age. Practically all her life was spent in this vicinity. She is survived by Mrs. James Burns, Mrs. Thomas Hooey, Mrs. Thomas Gulliver, Mrs. Matilda Taylor, daughters; E. Edgar, William F., James H., and Almeron, sons. Her's was truly a useful and fruitful life. In religion she was a Baptist. We could write pages in regard to her life, but this one short sentence speaks volumes, "By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them."
