On Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, occurred the death of James Jackson, an aged resident and veteran of the civil war. He had been a life-long resident of the town of Cameron, having spent practically his entire life on the farm where his death occurred. "Uncle Jim" as he was familiarly known was in his 87th year. He was born in the town of Barrington, Yates county. Having been a man of robust build he had always enjoyed the best of health until about two years ago, due to his advanced age. He was taken with pneumonia a few days ago, which was the cause of his death. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Uncle Jim and his wife, aunt Charity, who survives, were two of the oldest and most active residents in this vicinity. Mr. Jackson was a veteran of the civil war, having served as a private from 1862 until the close of the war and served his country with honors in the thickest of the fray. He was a member of the Martin Hallett Post, G. A. R., until same was disbanded. He has one grandson, Raymond Jackson who is now in the National Army at Camp Dix, N. J.
Besides his aged wife, he is survived by one son, Willby Jackson of this town, also five daughters, Mrs. Thomas Hargrave, and Mrs. Welthy Roosa of Cameron, Mrs. Eva Barrett and Mrs. A. B. Allen of Rochester, and Mrs. E. H. Williamson of Hammondsport. He also has one living sister, Mrs. Eliza Booth of Hornell. Mr. Jackson had the distinction of having the largest number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, also nephews and nieces of any person in this vicinity.
The funeral was held from the family home on South Hill at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial in the Boyd cemetery at Boyd's Corners, the Rev. R. E. Wilson of this village officiating.
