- Death of M. F. Sickly
The death of Millard Filmore Sickly occurred at his late home in the town of Groveland near the head of Conesus lake opposite Maple Beach Sunday afternoon at 2:40. Mr. Sickly had been in falling health for two or more years, but was confined to his bed only one week. His death was due to cancer of the stomach, which was not suspected until too late for corrective treatment. Mr. Sickly was the youngest son of Robert and Elizabeth Gray Sickly and was one of a family of five children, four boys and one girl, the daughter dying in infancy. He was born January 11, 1852, not far from the home in which he died, just across the way in the home owned by his parents and now a part of Maple Beach property. His oldest brother gave his life in the service of his country during the Civil war. Mr. Sickly was married to Miss Annie Louise Bearss in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bearss, in the town of Livonia on May 22, 1879, and in the following year they went to Kansas to reside. He bought and conducted a large farm there at LaHarpe until in 1905, when he was elected county treasurer and he and his family moved to Iola, the county seat. He served four years as county treasurer, and later, in 1912, came back to New York state and bought the farm home, where he has since resided with the exception of several winters which were spent in Kansas. He was a man of sterling integrity and a successful business man. He was engaged in the general merchandise business for several years at Groveland Corners before his marriage and removal to Kansas. He leaves his wife, four sons and one daughter: J. Dumont Sickly of Iola, Kansas; Clyde M. Sickly at home; Mrs. E. J. Bondy, Kansas City, Mo.; and R. Glenn Sickly of Detroit, Mich.; also three grandchildren; Anna Louise Bondy, Kansas City, Millard and Marianna Sickly of Detroit. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. Louis F. Mayle of Groveland officiating. Burial was in Iola cemetery, Kansas.
