  Notes	Of Samuel Bennett, it is said that when he came to settle on his place situated in the Seven Gullies at Groveland Hill (Bennett Hill Road), he had only a team of oxen an twenty dollars and that at the time of his death he owned seven farms and was the richest man in Groveland. Samuel and his wife Mary Ann had a large family, its been said by her granddaughter(Martha Linsner Linton), that she was pregnant eighteen times. She thinks that there were at least fourteen children that lived. Many of these died in infancy or early adulthood. Another interesting story passed down through the generations took place during the Civil War. As told by Marion Linton Marshall; One day while Samuel was out in the fields working, Mary Ann walked out to see him with the newspaper that had a list of men drafted for service in the Army. While reading off names to Samuel, she added his name, even though it wasn't listed. Without a hesitation, he dropped his rake and headed toward the house to get ready to go. Mary Ann apparently had a sense of humor.(Although it wasn't told if Samuel saw the same humor, when she told him he really wasn't on the list).
