- Ruth E. Clair, 83, formerly of Purdy Creek Road, entered into rest
Friday (Sept. 20, 2002) at Hornell Gardens after a long illness.
Mrs. Clair was born Jan. 8, 1919 in Hornell to Edward and Lavinia
(Woodworth) Evans. On Feb. 11, 1936, she married Robert J. Clair, who
predeceased her in Aug. of 1996. They had celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary in Feb. of 1996.
She was also predeceased by two sisters, Rosa Amidon and Elizabeth
Fancher and two brothers, Glen and Floyd Evans.
A life long resident of the Canisteo Valley, Mrs. Clair was a member
of the Canisteo Grange and was a Lecturer for the Hartsville Grange.
She was a member of the Hartsville Community Church and was a devout
Christian serving her church in various capacities. She was a
Hartsville election officer, and worked at the Home Bureau for many
years, and also was a Stanley Dealer for many years. Mrs. Clair was a
member of the Canisteo American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the
Canisteo Rod & Gun Club.
Mrs. Clair is survived by three sons, Edward (Betsy) Clair of
Hartsville, Ernest (Suzy) Clair of Indianapolis, Ind. and David (Ann)
Clair of Wellsville; four daughters, Viola (Pleas) Morris of
Hallsville, Mo., Joyce (Dick) Miller of Corning, Connie (Randall)
Dailey and Bobbi Sue (Joe) Murphy, both of Hornell; a brother-in-law,
Otto Amidon of Howard; a sister-in-law, Betty Evans of Horseheads; 33
grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today from 6-9 p.m. at the H.P. Smith
& Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main Street in Canisteo. Funeral and
committal services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hartsville
Community Church, Purdy Creek Rd., Hartsville, with the Rev. John
Sawyer officiating.
Burial will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery, Alfred.
Memorials in the name of Ruth Clair may be made to the Hartsville
