- James owned 126 acres of land in Almond,Allegany Co.,NY. Later moved to the city of Hornell. 1893 living at 251 Main Street, 1894 at 7 North Main and by 1896 when daughter Julia was married they were living at 53 1/2 Thacher St.

A Cripple Walks -- A Marvellous Change from a Sick Bed to Life and Health --
“For many months I have suffered everything but death. For weeks at a time, I was unable to stand on account of the most terrible pains, which extended from the small of my back into the sciatic nerves and streaked down my legs into my feet.
“There was a constant pain that reached to the nape of my neck and the back of my head. No man can describe the awful agony I endured, which was not only excruciating but continuous, night and day. I remained in this helpless and hopeless condition until every joint in my body became so stiff and sore I could scarcely move. My flesh left me to the extent of nearly twenty pounds. My eyes were sunken back into my head and surrounded by dark circles that made me look more like a skeleton than a human being.
“My appetite was gone. My stomach was so weak that I could not bear any strong food. During my sickness I had been treated by the best local physicians with no benefit whatever.”
Such were the sufferings of Mr. J. S. Ferrin, of 7 North Main St., this city, from sciatica. His pains were unendurable and had resisted large doses of anodynes. The muscles had contracted and the limb had shortened; Mr. Ferrin grew nervous and weak.
He said to the doctor: “I have tried everything but magnetism—if that fails I shall give up hope.” After the first magnetic treatment the pain was much relieved and he could sleep more soundly. The pain has continued to diminish and his general health to improve, and in less than a fortnight he has been able to go back to his employment at the brickyard. In less than four weeks’ time he has entirely recovered.
Mr. Ferrin now looks back on those long and weary months of his life with wonder and horror. It took Dr. Smith longer to eradicate from his system the effects of the opium, calomel, and other poisonous drugs than it has to cure the original disease.
Chronic sciatica is laid down in all medical works as incurable except by a painful and dangerous surgical operation, the effect of which is doubtful. Dr. Smith will give ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS in cash to any charitable institution in this city, designated by the patient for any case of sciatica which he cannot cure, provided the sufferer will agree to follow directions the prescribed length of time. This offer is neither bluff nor bluster but is made in the strictest good faith.
