- After growing up in Fremont he married Florence, and they moved to Rochester where they lived until 1930, upon removing to Hornell,NY. He took a job with Peck Motors in Hornell and was an auto mechanic ther for 14 years. In 1948 he established his own auto mechanic business, "Auto Specialized Service," retiring from his business in 1967. During ownership of that business he employed his cousin, Charles Davis as well as Florence's nephew, Bernard Smith Sr., who he later sold the shop to. Bernard went inot partnership with his son, Bernard Jr, who currently (1995) is in partnership with his son, Bradley Smith. The business is now located in Arkport,NY and still carries the name that Murry gave to it. He was custodian at the Hornell Masonic Temple from 1967 to 1984. He was a past master of Evening Star Lodge No.44 F&A.M. in Hornell, a past high priest of Steuben Chapter No.101 Royal Arch Masons in Hornell, a past master of the former Big Creek Grange and was a member and past president of the St.Paul's United Church of Christ. Murray would often "call" at square dances in the Hornell/Big Creek area and many times at Demons Ponds Dance Hall in Howard. He would also play his fiddle(violin) whenever he was asked. He was an avid golfer all his life and was known for his "straight shot, right down the middle". There is a tee maker for the 12th hole at Twin Hickory Golf Course in Hornell that has been named in his memory. In July, 1955 they began proceedings to adopt a then 3 moth old baby girl, Elizabeth Ann. Florence stayed at home to raise their daughter. Florence and Murray were involved in a motor vehicle accident on November 27, 1987 in the town of Hornellsville. Murray was driving their car and was broadsided by an oncoming vehicle. He was killed instantly and Florence was rushed to St.James Hospital in Hornell where the operated. She was in and out of consciousness for the next 30 hours, but passed away at noon on Sunday. On December 2, 1987, they were laid to rest, together, in the Howard Cemetery, beside Murray's mother and father.
