Letter transcribed by Donald Cady from Letters by George B. Burditt soldier in the Civil War and member of the 141st NY Infantry. The one full letter (23July1864) transcribed in this email is not in the bundle of letters included in the large zip file.Burditt Civil War Letters and History
Over 54 originally scanned letters from George B. Burditt to his mother from 1862 to 1865 while a soldier of the 141st New York Infantry. George's brothers-in-law, Joe Flint and Geo Morrison, also members of the 141st 'F' Co. are often mentioned in the letters (Joe wrote in two of them). Also includes an interesting poem about the history and travels of the 141st by Sergt Thomas D. Goundrey and other letters written by Edward Krieidler as part of the GAR(1901-1913). All of these were passed on to me from Clifford(Bud) and Carol Whitney, of Belmont,NY - Bud got them from an abandoned house in Hornell,NY several years ago, found in the attic. This is a zip file that includes the individual letters, it is a large file (90mb), but well worth the download wait time. Some of the letter are faded, however with some digital enhancements they can be viewed - some rather clearly (I have done no editing with these other than sorting and cropping). The Kreidler letters and Goundrey poem were sent to the Penn Yan Historical Society in Oct 2020.Occupation Farmer

Plot: BurdettNotes - George, the youngest of George Burditt's family, while a boy of 18, being filled with patriotism, could not rest until he had shouldered his rifle and marched away to the defense of his country. Having undergone all the privations and hardships of a soldier's life and having fought in numerous battles, the last of which was at Atlanta, I believe. With his regiment, the 141st NY Vols. marched thru Georgia and was honorably discharged at the age of 21. He then came home and a few years later married Harriet A. Wing of Geneva,NY. He bought a home in Hornell soon after and settled down where he still resides(1905) and where he still holds a position with the Erie Railroad Co.. Four children were born to them; three sons and one daughter. The daughter and one son died young. --written by his sister Almeda in 1905.
It was told by Uncle Murray Burdett, that after a battle, George took off his pack and found a bullet pushed up against his hatchet he had in his pack. George was mustered into F Company of the 141st on 11Sep1862. He was promoted to Corporal 16Feb1865 and was mustered out on 08Jun1865 at Washington,DC. He joined the South Dansville Lodge June 17 1871. He was a wagonmaker by trade.
