- JASPER -- Marilyn Payne, 74, of State Route 36, entered into rest Tuesday (March 12, 2002) at her home. Marilyn was born Oct. 6, 1927 in Hornell to Harvey and Madeline Phillips Mehlenbacher. On July 27, 1947, she married Ronald M. Payne, who predeceased her in December of 2001. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Garett Michael Welty; a sister, Joyce Marvin; and brother, Raymond Mehlenbacher. She was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1947. At one time she had been employed at Loohns Cleaners in Hornell and also the former Market Basket Grocery Store in Hornell. She was a school bus driver, cafeteria monitor and cashier at Jasper Central School for 21 years, retiring in 1989. She then managed the Pick & Poke Shop in Jasper for 12 years. She was a member of the United Church in Jasper and a former member of the Jasper Ambulance Corp. She was active in YMCA Water Aerobics in Hornell. Marilyn was an avid quilter and cherished and loved her family. Marilyn is survived by three daughters, Connie (Lee) Welty of Rexville, Terri Paddock (Rich Dunn) of Hornell and Teresa (Dahl) Rodgers of Bloomfield; one brother, Richard (June) Mehlenbacher of Gorham; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her close and dear friend, Frances Aldrich of Canisteo. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorials in the name of Marilyn Payne may be made to the American Lung Association or to the donor's choice.
