  Notes	ONTARIO COUNTY JOURNAL December 30, 1904 PAGE 2 COL 4 Death of Mortimer Sleght. About midnight on Sunday, at his home on Scotland Road, occurred the death of Mortimer Sleght, a long time and respected resident. Mr. Sleght had been in failing health for several years, and since November had been confined to the home with a complication of heart and kidney troubles. Deceased was born here sixty-six years ago, and most of his life had been spent here. He was a Constable for over twenty years, and was turnkey under Sheriff Robert H. Wheeler. In 1870 he married Harriet L. Scott, of Rochester, who with three sons, Walter S., Francis J., and Carlton M. Sleght, all prominent in the business life of the village survive. One brother, Carlton W. Sleght, of Allen's Hill, also survives. Mr. Sleght wasa a member of Company K, N Y Mounted Rifles, which did valiant service in the Civil War. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Lewis Sweet of the Presbyterian church conducting the service. His body was interred 1904 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery. Section 7 52. In the 1892 Canandaigua Census he is listed as 54 years of age, a Constable. 1900 Canandaigua Census shows them married 29 years. At the Ontario County Archives in Hopewell, NY, I found a copy of their marriage recorded in 1904 amongst the miscellaneous records. It read as follows, This certifies that on the twenty first day of September, in the year of our Lord 1870,A. Mortimer Sleght and H. Louise Scott were by me united in marriage at East Bloomfield, according to the laws of the State of NY. L. D. Chapin, Minister. Witnesses were H. C. Gilbert and Chas. McKinney. A true copy of the original recorded 30th December 1904. (Harriet Louise Scott is #4263.) Some humor has come to light concerning the changing of the spelling of the surname. According to a descendant of Mortimer, he sent a letter to his wife Louise explaining that they would change the spelling from Sleight to Sleght because the military had recorded his name as Sleght. Changing their name to Sleght was the only way to collect his pay and pension. The descendant related to me that there was a family joke that he lost an i, a verbal pun for eye, in the Civil War.
