  Notes	On Feb 29 1704, Deerfield had 41 houses with 291 people. Of these, 20 were soldiers. That night Sieur Hertel de Rouxville with 200 soldiers and 142 Abenaki and Caughnawaga Indians managed to scale the stockade on snowdrifts while the sentry slept. The sentry awoke and gave the alarm before all the houses had been surrounded, which undoubtedly saved some of the village. 165 persons were killed or captured and only 126 were left. The following day some of the survivors, reinforced by a small company from Hatfield under Captain Wells, pursued the War Party. They engaged the rear guard, losing the battle and nine more men., Widow Corse and her daughter Elizabeth were taken captive, but Ebenezer aged 12, and James aged 10, managed to hide and escape. The mother was killed on the trek to Canada. Elizabeth, her daughter, aged 8, survived. She never returned to her home. She grew up, married and had children in Canada.
