Notes |
- 1860 Eugene was working in Angelica with his Uncle Hiram Bowen, a Lawyer in Angelica.
- Eugene was a member of Company "I" in the 27th New York Regiment, under Capt. Gardner. He was the first man killed in the Civil War from Allegany Co.,NY, while on the front line of the first Battle of Bull Run. Eugene was known as a young man with great promise. He had enlisted 13May1861 at Angelica,NY (some debate if he was the first killed on the second from Allegany - see below)

Extract from a letter written by William Seiver(Seaver) of Angelica, late of Co. I, 27th Regiment, N.Y.V.:
"My impression is that Eugene Ferrin of West Almond, N.Y. was the first Allegany soldier who was killed in the Civil War. Our regiment had but just got onto the fighting ground of Bull Run under command of Col. Henry W. Slocum (later Major General Slocum) when directly in our front was two Rebel regiments; the first volley they fired Eugene Ferrin was struck in the forehead, standing at my side. If Babbitt was killed in the morning, before the battle of Bull Run I did not learn about it."
Extract from a letter written by Philander D. Ellithorpe of Buffalo, late of Co. I, 27th Regiment, N.Y.V.:
"I have no recollection of Ferrin but I do know when and where Albert Babbitt was killed; I saw him receive the second shot, after he was down; it was down in the valley, near the house and not far from where Col. Slocum was wounded. The Eighth Georgia regiment was on the skirmish line down the valley and there were two other regiments of Rebs in ambush; we did not see them until they opened fire upon us."
