- The death of Benjamin J. Mitchell occurred at the home of his youngest son, Clarence, in Garlinghouse, town of Naples, on Saturday, August 28, 1915, after a lingering illness of creeping paralysis. He was of a family of ten children all of whom have passed to the world beyond. He was born near Dansville, N. Y., on October 8, 1843, and his parents died while he was quite young.
He was married on December 27, 1864, to Miss Rebecca Jones, of Garlinghouse, who died in January, 1902. Three children were born to this union, two sons and a daughter. Their first years of married life were spent in Wisconsin, after which they returned to their native home and settled on a farm in Garlinghouse.
Mr. Mitchell was again married on October 23, 1904, to Mrs. Sarah West Armstrong, of the town of Springwater, N Y., who died in November, 1907.
He was a very prosperous and energetic farmer having followed that occupation since a young man.
He is survived by his children, Frank, who lives near North Cohocton, Myra, who is Mrs. Frank Eldridge, living near Geneva, and Clarence, with whom he lived; also two grandchildren, Alvin Eldridge and Vera Mitchell, besides several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, August 31, from the home at 1 o'clock p. m. and from the Garlinghouse school house at 2 p m., conducted by Richard Monlten, of North Cohocton. Burial in Clearview cemetery, North Cohocton, by the side of his former wife.
