- HORNELL/ALFRED - D.L. Fisher, 101, formerly of 9 Florence St., Hornell, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening (Oct. 5, 2004) at the home of his daughter, June Hitchcock, at 15 S. Main St., Alfred.
Born in Canisteo on Dec. 22, 1902, he was a son of the late Clinton and Lanah Hammer Fisher. He was married to the former Katherine Smith, who predeceased him in 1970 after 44 years of marriage.
He attended the former Hornell Business School, and managed the former Grand Union Store in Hornell.
While residing in Canisteo, D.L. owned and operated the former Fisher's Food Market, from 1928 until his retirement in 1969, at which time he moved to Hornell.
He attended the Canisteo Presbyterian Church, and was instrumental in forming the Canisteo Rifle Club. An avid bowler and chess player, D.L. was a charter member of the Hornell Chess Club, and formerly served as the secretary and treasurer.
His family includes his daughter, June Hitchcock of Alfred, with whom he had resided the past several years; his son, Donald Fisher of Las Vegas, Nev.; also his 12 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, D.L. was predeceased by his daughter, Marilyn Gillette, his sister, Bernice Vanderhoef, and his brother, Norman Fisher.
At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in D.L.'s memory to the Canisteo Volunteer Fire Dept., in care of Gerald Bertram, 42 Fourth St., Canisteo, N.Y. 14823.
