- One of Oldest Residents of County Passes Away
Mrs. Almira F. Crooker, 91 years old, died at her home on the Canandaigua-Centerfield Road, Saturday, May 1st, after a several weeks' illness of pneumonia followed by apoplexy. Mrs. Crooker was a life-long resident of this county, having been born at Allen's Hill, December 18, 1834, the daughter of Shubael and Marilla Jones Ferrin. Active until the last few months of her life, Mrs. Crooker often recalled incidents of her early life. She remembered the Indians, selling beaded moccasins and baskets, and often spoke of her school days, when she attended school taught by Mary J. Haws, who later became the famous novelist, Mary Jane Holmes, after her marriage to Daniel Holmes. She recalled the old stagecoaches used for travel and that her father, who was a blacksmith, always had to have shoes ready for the four horses used to draw the coaches, in case of need. Mrs. Crooker always was keenly interested in affairs of the day. She leaves two daughters, Miss Jennie Crooker, residing with her; Mrs Allison T. Bennett of Victor; a half-sister, Mrs. Allen A. Jones of Saranac Lake; three grandchildren, LeRoy, Carl and Miss Jane Bennett, and two great-grandchildren, Carl and Louis Bennett, all of Victor. Funeral services were held at her late home, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. George E. Finlay of the Canandaigua Baptist church officiating. Burial was made in the East Bloomfield cemetery.
