Notes |
- Irene left home at a young age, not even 18 yet, because she wanted to be a nurse. She didn't want to follow in the paths of the other women in her family by working in woolen mills. She went to work at Lee Hospital on Lake Avenue in Rochester. Irene became close, lifelong friends with a young woman by the name of Ruth Jackson, whose family let Irene live with them after she left home. When Irene later met and married Oliver Gregg, he didn't want her to work outside the home, so she quit nursing and became a stay-at-home wife and mother.
Irene was a very private person who believed in working hard; do the difficult things first, follow a plan, and don't look back. She was very close to her Grandmother Stone (Jane Denniston Stone Barker) whom she called "Moggie."
"'Uncle Mart' (Martin Eugene Stone) was her favorite uncle; he was a dear man."
