Death Record of Alexander McMullen, 1881 Burial Saint Stephen's Cemetery, Nicetown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania
Notes - Alexander McMullen began life in rural Ireland but, like many famine-era Catholics, crossed to Scotland’s rapidly-expanding Lanarkshire/Ayrshire ironstone pits. There he married Ann Haggerty and started a family in the village of Dalmellington, a company town dominated by blast-furnaces and colliery rows.
When the American anthracite boom lured British-Isles miners westward in the mid-1850s, Alexander joined the tide. Ship manifests for that period show agents actively recruiting skilled Scottish pit-men for Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania’s “Southern Field.” The McMullens settled first in Reilly Township, adding six U.S.-born children to the household while Alexander worked seams owned by the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co.
By 1880 declining health—and perhaps the lure of regular wages in mills or rail-yards—moved the family to Philadelphia’s Nicetown/Logan district. Less than a year later, on 13 May 1881, Alexander died; his widow Ann out-lived him by 25 years and returned to coal-country relatives in Schuylkill County.
Alexander’s grave is among the modest mid-row stones—typical of working-class interments whose families could afford only a “single-lot” purchase.
Alexander McMullen’s life traces a classic 19th-century labour arc—Ireland → Scottish ironstone → Pennsylvania anthracite → Philadelphia industry—ending in a small Nicetown cemetery whose stones still whisper the story of immigrant endurance and family tenacity.
