Beckwith, who spent the early part of his life in connection with railroads and afterwards engaged in the manufacture of iron in Paterson, N. J. His wife was Esther Ann Clarke, and their children were Charles D., Joseph A., and Julia Frances Beckwith. Mr. Beckwith died in 1875. Charles D. Beckwith attended the district schools and New Haven Military School. After leaving school he engaged with his father in the iron business. He was a prominent man in Paterson, serving two terms as mayor of the city, and one term as member of the Fifty-first Congress. He is a member of Columbia Lodge Xo. 98, F. & A. M., is a Knight Templar, and a member of the Royal Arcanum. He was married to Frances C. Jaqua, daughter of Sherman Jaqua. of Connecticut. Their children are Charles E., Fanny J., George A., Claude S., Marion C. and Florence C.

Charles D. Beckwith (October 22, 1838, near Coveville, Saratoga County, New York - March 27, 1921, Chatham Center, New York) was an American Republican Party politician from New Jersey who represented the 5th congressional district from 1889 to 1891.
Beckwith was born near Coveville, New York (in Sartoga County) on October 22, 1838; attended private schools in Troy, New York, Philadelphia, Worcester, Massachusetts, and a military institution in New Haven, Connecticut. He moved to Paterson, New Jersey in 1860 and engaged in the manufacture of iron. He was member of the board of aldermen in 1882, and mayor of Paterson from 1885-1889.
He was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving in office from March 4, 1889-March 3, 1891, but was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty-second Congress.
After leaving Congress, he resumed manufacturing pursuits. He returned to the State of New York and settled on a farm in the town of Chatham in Columbia County, New York in 1897 and engaged in the management of his farm until his death near Chatham Center on March 27, 1921. He was interred in Chatham Center Rural Cemetery.
