- HORNELL - David K. Burdell, 64, of 35 William St., died Monday (Sept. 5, 2005) in St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 5, 1940, in Hornell, the son of Floyd and Alyce Spratt Burdell. David was married Sept. 29, 1984, in Ravena to Laura J. Salisbury, who survives.
David resided most of his life in Hornell, except for 10 years in the Albany area and five years in Buffalo. A 1959 graduate of Hornell High School, he was a drummer in the high school band and loved jazz music. While in school, he was employed at the former Loblaw's Grocery Store in Hornell. He was employed on the Erie Railroad, which later became the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, then Conrail, retiring from the CSX on July 17, 2002, as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of the Hornell Lodge #364 B.P.O.E., Hornell Lodge #210 L.O.O.M. and Hornell Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. David touched a lot of hearts and truly cared for those around him. He is survived by a son, David (Christine) Vosburg of Savoy, Texas; a daughter, Katherine Burdell, at home; a stepdaughter, Jena (Ponchos)Nieves of Ravena; an aunt, Helen Davis of Rochester; four grandchildren, Andrea and Bryan Vosburg, Joseph LaMountain and Dante Nieves; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Rev. David M. Kilgore officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell. Hornell Lodge #364 will conduct an
Elks memorial service 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
