- Lee Roy Ryan, 80, went home to be with the Lord at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla., on Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) after a short illness. Born April 8, 1920 in North Hornell, he was the son of the late Anna Paul Ryan Gatchell and John Madison Ryan. He lived in Hornell and Burns until his marriage on Oct. 13, 1936 to the former Louise Ormsby Doan, who survives. They farmed with her parents, Arthur and Mildred Doan, on the Vandermark Road, Scio, for several years, and then moved to the Buffalo area until his call to active duty during World War II in April 1944. He graduated from Sampson Naval Station and served as radar operator on a minesweeper until his honorable discharge in November, 1945. Returning to this area, he was a meter reader for NYSEG until they purchased a dairy farm on Karr Valley, Almond, which the family operated until 1965. During that time, he was active in Farm Bureau and local politics, serving as assessor and justice of the peace for the Town of Almond. In 1969, he was elected and served two four-year terms on the newly organized Allegany County Board of Legislators, representing six townships in the southeastern portion of the county. He retired in 1982 from Alfred Tech, where he had worked 16 years as stationary engineer, and in 1984 from the US Postal Department, having served 18 years as substitute and regular mail carrier. For the past 18 years, he and his wife spent winters at their home in Skyview Estates, Lakeland, Fla. Lee was a recipient of a 1999 Paul Harris Award, through Watkins Glen Rotary Club, by his son David. He served as president of Alfred Tech CSEA, was active in the retired CSEA chapter, and held leadership roles in the Almond Senior Citizens. He was a member of the Alfred Almond Bible Church and had received forgiveness of sins and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ his personal Savior in 1979. Survivors in addition to his wife of 64 years include their four children, Lee A. (Donna) Ryan of Almond; Larry R. (Elizabeth) Ryan of Bath, Linda (Bruce) Cornell of Almond and David E. (Linda) Ryan of Watkins Glen; 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey Ryan of Canisteo, Jennifer Baker and Bruce Todd Cornell of Almond, Michael Ryan and Colleen Hauryski of Bath, Kelly Stewart of Elmira, Rebecca Willis, Melissa Gallow, Stephen Ryan and Randall Cornell of Watkins Glen, Daniel Cornell of Corry, Pa., Patrick Ryan of Sterling, Va., and Heidi Lindley of Anderson, Ind.; 35 great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Ryan Husman of Holland; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Eric Lee Ryan, in 1960 and a great-grandson, Caleb Cornell in 1988. Calling hours will be at the Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., 41 Genesee St., Hornell, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday with services at the Alfred Almond Bible Church, Rte. 21, Almond, on Friday at 11 a.m. Memorial may be given in Lee R.
