    • A. Cornwell Shuman, 95, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Rosewalk Village. Born March 6, 1908, at Charlotte, NC, he graduated from Charlotte High School in 1925. In 1930, he graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He attended a geology summer school at the University of Colorado in 1929. In 1935, he received his PhD in chemistry from Cornell, where he participated in the rowing squad and ran track.

      From 1931-32, Dr. Shuman worked for Cornell as supervisor and chemist in charge of the university's water purification plant. He was a research chemist for Diamond Crystal Salt Co. in St. Clair, MI, from 1935-39. Fro 1939-54, he was a research chemist for General Foods in Hoboken, NJ, and New York, where he did patent work on several products. In 1954 he moved to West Lafayette. He taught biochemistry at Purdue University from 1954-57, organizing and teaching three courses in food chemistry and conducting research on meat tenderizers. In 1955, he founded and operated the Shuman Chemical Laboratory in Battle Ground. He retired from the laboratory in 1984.

      Dr. Shuman held memberships in several technology societies, and was emeritus member of American Chemical Society, fellow of the American Institute of Chemistry, charter member of Sigma Xi, a member of Institute of Food Technologists and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

      An avid mineralogist, he was a member of the Wabash Valley Gem and Mineral Society and was president for many years. He was also a member of Friends of Mineralogy. He made and sold gold-plated jewelry and faceted stones, as well as plating gems. He had done extensive genealogical research on his family, and was formerly a magician. He was a member of First United Church in West Lafayette for 46 years.

      On Nov. 24, 1932, he married Eleanor Bonney Crombie, in Kenmore, NY. She survives along with two daughters, Ann Burdette (husband Larry) of Clarence, NY, and Peggy Treece (husband Carl) of West Lafayette; a son, John Charles Shuman (wife Sharon) of West Lafayette; two brothers, Donald Shuman and Jack Northey Shuman, both of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
