Name Mary Louise Cook Birth 22 Mar 1842 Bridghampton, Suffolk Co., New York, USA Gender Female Death 24 Apr 1908 North Haven, Suffolk County, New York, USA Burial Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., New York, USA Notes - Mary Louise, widow of Samuel Leek, and daughter of J. Rogers and Temperance Woodruff Cook, was born in Bridgehampton, March 22, 1842, and died of pneumonia in her home at North Haven, Friday, April 24, 1908. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. Y. Bovard.
Mrs. Leek was converted in childhood and became an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Bridge Hampton. Upon her marriage with Samuel Leek and their making of a home at North Haven, they joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in this village, which connection was maintained until their decease.
She received a liberal education in the Academies at Southampton and Bridge Hampton; at the latter place graduating with high rank at Prof. Hallock's Institute. For several years thereafter she was an efficient and painstaking teacher in the District Schools in the town.
At the age of eighteen she was called to China by her uncle and spent two most delightful years in the society of English families in the cities of Canton and Shanghai.
Mrs. Leek was endowed with a well poised mind and a patient and lovable nature. To her cultured mind she added the gifts and graces of a spiritual inheritance in Christ, making her home and the home she entered fragrant with blessed associations.
She moved quietly, gently and without noise or display, and the unostentatious refinement of a true cultured woman impressed itself upon those who knew her, securing their respect and affection.
In the training and discipline of the large family she manifested exceptional ability and rare qualities of motherhood.
Three children and four stepchildren survive her and call her "blessed." E.W.
