- FALL CONTRIBUTED TO WATCHMAN'S DEMISE
Heart failure with an injury to the head which caused an edema of the brain acting as a contributory cause was responsible for the death yesterday morning of Eugene J. Spalding, 79 years old, special watchman at the Mechanic Warehouse, who was found dead at 7:30 a.m.
Paul McLaughlin, 404 Central avenue, an employee of the Peoria Cartage company, told of being informed of the man's death by pedestrians who found the body in the doorway of the plant. McLaughlin said the victim's face was scratched, apparently where he fell against the door & that he then toppled backward striking his dead.
Dr. E.C. Burhans told the jury the heart was dilated & that he suffered from the brain injury. He said it was probable that the man was seized with the attack & started for the door for air when he was overcome. Dr. Burhans said the victim might not have died from the heart attack had he not injured his brain in the fall.
Albert Trefager, 3601 Prospect road, president of the company, said Spalding would not have had the door open unless he had been ill. The punch clock at the plant showed the victim had punched in at 7:05 a.m.
Ray Spalding, a son, 2530 Prospect road, said his father appeared in good health Sunday when he left his residence. He said he learned since his father's death that his parent had had previous heart attacks but had concealed them from him.
Funeral services for Mr. Spalding will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Gauss Mortuary chapel. The Rev. Ernest L. Fernandes, pastor of Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hawley cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Spalding was born at Tremont, Ill., December 24, 1854, the son of Matthew W. and Maretta Slaughter Spalding. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Howard in this city on March 15, 1882.
He is survived by the widow, one son Ray S. Spalding, a letter carrier out of the Peoria post office; four daughters, Mrs. Charles Thorne, Alta, Ill.; Mrs. Edward Clark, Hanna City, Ill.; Mrs. Charles Powers, Henry, Ill., and Mrs. Norton Newcomb, Ypsilanti, Mich.; two brothers, Frank Spalding, Albuquerque, N.M., and Samuel D. Spalding, of Peoria, and 16 grandchildren. A son, Howard M. Spalding, preceded his father in death.
