He was born at Bennington, Vt., Feb. 21, 1806. He lived for a time, over half a century ago, in the far west among the Indians and 48 years ago removed to central New York, at Groton, in which place and in Cortland he resided until eight years ago, when he came to Owego to make his home with his daughter, the wife of N. A. Steevens, 90 Chestnut street, where his death occurred. On Jan. 31, this year, he fell and injured his left hip and thigh so seriously that he was confined to the bed. Up to the time that this accident interfered with his usual activity, he was in a remarkable physical and mental condition. Belonging as he did to Cortlandville Lodge, No. 470, F. and A.M., and Vesta Lodge, No. 255, I.O.O.F., of Cortland, he was probably the oldest Mason and Odd Fellow in this state. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. N.A. Steevens of Owego and Miss Mary Nye of Sonyea, Livingston Co., N.Y. Brief services were conducted at the Steevens residence, 90 Chestnut street, at 7:30 Tuesday evening by Revs. C.M. Bartholomew and William Edgar and the remains were taken on the Lehigh Valley Wednesday morning to Cortland, where the funeral was held at the M.E. church at 2 p.m. and where the interment was made.
