- John W. Phillips- one of the oldest pioneers of Rochester and Monroe county died yesterday afternoon, a his residence on Washington Street, John W. Phillips, aged seventy-three, breathed his last. Mr. Phillips was born in Bloomfield, and had lived in this county sixty-seven years. he ran the first steam freight boat on the Erie canal, and was for years identified with the freight and coal business in this city. He was one of the very first men engaged in the export and sale of coal in this city. For a number of years he had been retired from business. His wife died about four years ago, and the deceased leaves the following children: A. F. Phillips, Titiusville, PA; Miss Sarah B. Phillips, of this city; Mrs. Helen Walker, of Chili, and C. A. and E. A. Philips of this city. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon.
