During the 1870s, John was in the Grocery Business with his brother, Oscar, in Gloversville. He also worked in Johnstown for a number of years as a foreman in two Glove companies, Ricketts & Hodgson and Stewart & Briggs. He later successfully got involved in the Glove business for himself in Gloversville.
In 1899, he moved with his family to Milwaukee where he became foreman of the Ellsworth & Thayer Glove Manufacturing Company where he stayed until he became involved in his own Glove business there again.
