- Jude Sawyer was a Revolutionary War soldier and one of the founding fathers of Gardner, MA. Jude Sawyer came to what would become Gardner from Lancaster and was a farmer and blacksmith who was noted for creating steel traps including the fact that he created them well into his 90s. Like many of Gardner's founding fathers Jude Sawyer was a Revolutionary soldier who served in Captain Elisha Jackson's Company at the Bennington Alarm. Sawyer married a woman named Phoebe Keyes but they had no children. Sawyer died at the age of 93
