    Notes
    • William H. Schwingle was born in Dansville, NY, September 21, 1842, and died very suddenly at his home in Naples on Saturday, December 9, 1916. His father and mother came from Germany. Mr. Schwingle enlisted in August 1862 in the 28th Independent Battery, New York Volunteer Artillery, and was honorably discharged July 31, 1865. He was a brave soldier and extremely patriotic. Hearing Dr. Wilbur and his people talking about our troubles in Mexico, he asked one of his sons to go upstairs and bring down his gun; clasping it in his feeble hands, he said, "I fought for my country once, and I would gladly do so again if I could." April 3, 1866, he was married to Miss Katherine Hoffman, of Perkinsville, and for thirty-four years they lived on the Monier farm, on the West Hollow road, retiring and coming to their home in Cohocton street about eleven years ago.
Mrs. Schwingle survives him, also seven children: Jacob C, Conrad C , William J., Mrs. Jacob Cano and Mrs. William McGrew, all of Naples, and Mrs. J. L. Woodard, of Gulick; also sixteen grandchildren. This is the first death to occur in his immediate family. He also leaves two brothers and one sister, John Schwingle, of Cohocton; George Swingle, of Allen's Hill, and Mrs. Foldine Hoffman, of Mt. Morris. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at 2pm on Tuesday, Dr. J. H. France officiating, and interment was in Rose Ridge cemetery. Bingham Post, G.A.R., of which he was a member, attended in a body.
