Name Moses Ebenezer Sammis Birth 16 Aug 1833 Rensselaer Co., New York, USA Gender Male Death 18 Dec 1888 Pennington Co., South Dakota, USA Burial Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, Pennington Co., South Dakota, USA Notes - At his residence about five miles from Rapid City on the Rocherville road, December 18,1888, of Cancer of the stomach, Moses E Sammis, about sixty years. Moses E Sammis was one of the little band of white men, who braved the trials and the hardships of life on the frontier that a way might be broken for thousands to follow. He came to the Black Hills in 1876 or early 1877 and settled in Deadwood where he engaged in mining.
After some years spent there he moved to the farm where he spent his last days. His last illness was naturally accompanied by much physical suffering, all of which was borne with patience. Realizing that he was beyond human help, he quietly waited for the coming of death and when it came he passed peacefully into the great beyond.
He was apparently originally buried on his farm. There is a Sammis Road that runs off of Mt Rushmore road at the top of the hill before the road goes down into where Hart Ranch Etc is located.
