- Mrs. Allen J. Clair
Mrs. Jane Walker Clair, widow of Allen J. Clair died Monday afternoon (May 29, 1961) at the home of her daughter and son-in-la, Mr. and Mrs. Morris R. Lyman, 317 Fifth Ave., following a long illness.
Mrs. Clair was born in Titusville, PA, Oct 11, 1872, the daughter of Mark T. McCormick and Mary Tingley McCormick. She lived in Olean the last 80 years. Her first husband, Albert Preston Walker, whom she married in 1893, died in 1907. She later married Mr. Clair, who died in 1936.
She was an 1892 graduate of Westbrooks Commercial Academy, and a 1909 graduate of the School of Mechanic-Therapy and Hydrotherapy in Chicago.
Mrs. Clair was active all of her life in various church activities. As a young woman, she helped in organizing the South Side Chapel, a non-denominational Sunda school still located on S. Union St. She severed there as a Bible teacher for many years ago Mrs. Clair compiled an official history of the chapel.
At the turn of the century, the Christian Endeavor was a prominent youth organization and Mrs. Clair devoted leadership to this locally and severed as an officer in the Cattaraugus County Christian Endeavor, assisting in establishing youth groups in various churches in the county.
As Dr. Jane McCormick Walker from 1910-1920, she built and operated Laural Hill Healthorium a sanatorium located on the Rock City Rd at White's Glen. This was a pioneer venture offering to the residents of the Olean- Bradford area a health program based on hydrotherapy vegetarian dieting and outdoor living and sleeping.
Mrs. Clair was one of the oldest living members of the First Baptist Church of Olean. She was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. For 10 years she severed as secretary of the Loyal Temperance Legion the children's division of the WCTU. She resigned this position eight years ago, due to illness.
Surviving besides, Mrs. Lyman are three grandchildren. Mrs. Henry Riekenberg, Anaheim Calif., Frances Walker, Santa Ana, Calif., and Mrs. Bille Bearbower, also of Santa Ana: five great grandchildren: two stepsons, Allen D. Clair, Whittier Calif; Clifford Clair, Boulder, Colo., three stepdaughters, Mrs. Harold (Emily) Shannon Sr., Whittier; Mrs. Nettie Gallagher, San Francisco, Calif., and Mrs. Herbert (Sarah) Burton, Waverley, Ohio.
Friends may call at the Halwig Funeral Home Inc. 2-5 and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home. The Rev. Forrest B. Fordham, pastor of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery.
