    Notes
    • Mrs. Elizabeth Gulliver, aged 86 yrs, 1 mo, 18 days, died at the home of her son, James Burns of Howard on the morning of Jan 4, 1912. She was born in Lispall, Cavan Co, Ireland. Came to New Jersey in 1847 and in 1854 moved to the town of Howard where she spent the rest of her life.
She married at the age of sixteen to Eleazer Armstrong. From this union there was born one son, Martin Armstrong of Bath. The death of Mr. Armstrong soon after they reached New Jersey left her a widow at the age of 22. Alone among strangers in a strange land she was left to support herself and child.
At the age of 26 she was again united in marriage to James Burns, Sr. to them were born two sons, John Burns of Fremont and James Burns of Howard. At the age of 32 she buried her second husband, this time a widow with three children to support. At the age of 33 she was again united the third time to James Gulliver, and to this union was born one son, Thomas Gulliver of Howard.
Death severed this union more than _ years ago and since then she has survived alone until August 1911 when she became helpless and was moved to the home of her son Thomas Gulliver for about one month and then to James Burns’ where she remained until the end came.
Mrs. Gulliver was a great sufferer but she bore it with Christian patience, only waiting for the end which came to her joy. During her sickness all that human hands and medical aid could possibly do was done but to no avail, only death could bring relief.
The deceased was a faithful member of the Wesleyan Methodist church and a kind neighbor and highly respected citizen of sterling character and unswerving loyalty to the right. With undaunted courage she faced the hardships and privations of early pioneer days, rearing her four sons to become honored and respected citizens, thereby leaving an example of courage and faithfulness.
Besides four sons, she leaves sixteen grandchildren and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances to morn their loss but what is our loss is her gain. Her afflictions are over, her trials are over. She has fought a good fight and finished her course and gone to her reward.
Funeral Services were held at Howard Baptist Church, Rev. F. S. Lee of Cattaraugus, officiating, assisted by Rev. E. H. Johnson of Howard.
