The deceased had been in usual health, but all unknown to those who loved him the dread disease was insidiously stealing away his life before them. An affection of the heart was the direct cause of Mr. Jewell's death. He was born in Alegheny county, New York, July 7, 1831. The deceased was only two years old when his parents removed to Michigan, where he was reared upon the home farm amid the wild scenes of frontier life. While quite young he began an apprenticeship as an engineer and was employed by large factories and saw mills until the time of the Civil war. He manifested his loyalty to his government by enlisting in Co. K, 12th Michigan Infantry, with which command he served 2 years and 11 months. He participated in the battle of Sabine Cross Roads and in many similar engagements, and when the war was ended received an honorable discharge.
In 1869 Mr. Jewell was united in marriage, in Michigan, to Saraph A. Whitford and moved to Allen county, Kansas, in 1870. He located in the southwest corner of Salem township, where he has since made his home. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters to mourn his loss. He was a good citizen, as his personal honor and integrity was never questioned, a kind husband and father and respected by all who knew him. But he had lived his three score years and ten, with two more years in which to add to the noble structure of his life. The funeral services took place at the residence of the deceased at 1 p. m. Monday and consisted of remarks by Dr. Karl Voegtle which were appropriate to the occasion and the deceased. The remains were then followed to Mt. Hope cemetery by many friends and there laid to rest.
