    Notes
    • I was born in Yakima, Washington, November 26, 1913, to Michael C. Ley and Mabel C. Allen Ley. I lived in Yakima for the first 26 years of my life. After high school I attended Whitman College Conservatory of Music where I received a BA, MA, a Conservatory diploma and piano soloist degree. My high school teaching term only lasted a year and a half when I joined the service and served on a Patrol Frigate as a first class radioman on convoy and weather duty. When the war ended it was back to college where I received a BS and Dr. of Optometry degrees from Pacific University. Coquille, Oregon, is where I settled to practice for the next forty years. My wife Jeanne Wenger met me at Whitman and helped through the tough years. She passed away in 1966, and I later married Dorothy Boskill Sanford who had much song and dance experience. We were the beginning people that started the Sawdust Theater [in Coquille], which was a successful enterprise.

Jeanne's sister Carol had three boys - Rick, David, and Bobby, while married to Pat Patterson. Dorothy's children while married to Ray Sanford were Jane Sanford Harrison and John. I had no children of my own.

My sister Arda had Bill, Patty, and Butch by her first husband Kenneth Thompson. After his death she remarried Leon Clevenger with whom she had Mark and Leone.

I am a life member of the Elks, Lions, Vets of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Oregon Optometric Association.

While married to Dorothy, we traveled around the world and visited many countries. For a period I enjoyed motorcycling with companions. After that it was flying. Golf was my longest game period, especially after retirement. For six years after Dorothy's death I enjoyed a sports car with my companion, Grace Ellingson Greenough. After I moved to the Eugene Hotel Retirement Center, Joan Wren was my close companion for nearly four years.

It has been a full life with the things I wanted to do and accomplish.

A memorial service will be held May 16, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Eugene Hotel. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Sawdust Theater, Box 51, Coquille, OR, 97423.
