John Stretton

-
Name John Stretton Gender Male Death 1684 East Hampton, Suffolk Co., New York, USA Burial South End Cemetery, East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York, USA Notes - One of the 'first nine settlers' of East Hampton, his name stands fifth on the list of the founders of that town in 1649. His brother Richard Stretton joined him a year later. An excellent account of the extant records of his time at East Hampton, including a complete transcription of his will, can be found in Charles H. Cory's Lineal Ancestors of Susan (Mulford) Cory, wife of Captain James Cory, vol. III, part II, 1937, pp. 306-328. In his work Cory claims John Stretton [or Stratton] of East Hampton was "a probable son" of William Stretton (1585-1647) of Tenterden, Kent, which is stated as fact by Harriet Russell Stratton in her A Book of Strattons, vol. I, 1908, p. 117, but this claim was refuted by the excellent genealogist Donald Lines Jacobus.
In addition to the sons listed below he was the father of Steven Hand's wife (who was the mother of Joseph and Steven Hand), Stephen Hedges's wife Hannah, Henry Norris's wife Abigail, Rebecca Bushnell, and Ruth White.
