  Notes	Dr. Simeon Pliny Root, son of Pliny Root and Ruth Cleveland Root , b. Feb. 24, 1826; New York., m. April 7, 1852, Susan E. Haynes. He finished his literary studies at the University of Michigan; attended his first course of medical lectures at the Ohio Medical College, and his last course at the Rush Medical College of Chicago, 111., where he graduated in the winter of 1853 and '54. He has been in active practice as a physician and surgeon. He went into the army as surgeon of the Eighteenth Michigan volunteer infantry, was promoted to brigade surgeon in a short time, became division surgeon and medical director, and was a member of Gen. Gillmore's staff. He is well known in public affairs in his county and state, and was a delegate to the constitutional convention, from Hillsdale county. He is nearly six feet in height, and weighs 200 pounds. Root from Bellevue, Ohio to Somerset, the former home,for the funeral and burial.The remains were taken there on the 2:45 train and services were held at the church at Somerset, upon arrival, Rev.G.L. Smith officiating. Burial was in Somerset cemetery, beside wife, son and daughter, The funeral party was composed of Miss. Eva J. Root, and president J.W. Mauck, of Hillsdale; E.M. Smith, of Albion; Dr.and Mrs. W.F.Dewey, of Bellevue, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Van Buskirk, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. D. T. McCall, of Jackson, and Rev. G.L. Smith, of Lakewood, Ohio. Miss Root, Mrs. Dewey, and Mrs. Van Buskirk are the daughters. Dr. Root was 87 years of age. He practiced medicine at Somerset most of his active life.
