- OWEGO - One Candor man is dead and two others are listed in poor condition in the intensive care unit of Tompkins County Hospital in Ithaca as the result of an early-morning accident in Tompkins County.
Roy A. Stickle, 19, of 20 Church Street, Candor, was pronounced dead on arrival at Tompkins County Hospital following the accident, according to Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies. Mr. Stickle, son of Town of Candor Justice and Mrs. John Stickle, was a passenger in the fatal car. Deputies said the accident happened about 1:15 o'clock this morning in Route 34 just outside Ithaca.
Deputies said the car, driven by James Galpin, 20, of 128 River Road, Candor, was travelling south in Route 34 at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. According to deputies, the car left the road, travelled 130 feet sideways, and struck a concrete wall on the passenger side. Both Mr. Galpin and another passenger, Paul Haus, 21, of Candor RD2 are listed in poor condition in the intensive care unit of Tompkins County Hospital, according to hospital officials.
The accident was investigated by Sgt. Raymond Stark and Deputy Larry LaPlant, of the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department.
He is survived, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Mrs. Cathy Hoover, Dryden; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Swartwood of Auburn; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard J. Post, of Andover; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a graduate of Candor Central High School and the Riverside School of Aeronautics, Utica. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Allen Funeral Home, Candor.
