- Ex-Mayor of Livonia Dies at 81
LIVONIA — Clarence W. Van Der Meid, 81, a former mayor and village trustee, of 49 Main St., died yesterday (Nov. 18, 1972) in his home following a long illness.
Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Mr. Van Der Meid was engaged in the production of farm produce in Lima and East Avon until his retirement 16 years ago. He served as a village trustee for about 10 years between 1933 and 1943. He was elected Mayor, serving between 1953 and 1957.
Mr. Van Der Meid served on the Livonia Central School Board about 10 years and was a local director of the Federal Land Bank program for 10 years. He was a director of the Union Cemetery Association of Livonia. He also was a member of the United Church of Livonia, the Livonia Rotary Club and Livonia Lodge No. 778, F.&A.M.
His survivors include his wife, Florence Clapp Van Der Meid; three sons, John E. and William R., both of Livonia, and Robert W. of Torrance, Calif.; one brother, Leon S. of Livonia; one sister, Mrs. Roy (Blanche) Barber of Rochester; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Friends may call at the Brown Funeral Home in Livonia today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. where a service will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family, in Union Cemetery.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the United Church of Livonia or the Genesee Valley Heart Association of Livonia.
