VanderMeid died peacefully, Dec. 10, at Scripps Hospital, Chula Vista, after suffering a severe stroke the night before. Bob served with the United States Army for three years during World War II. After his military service, he graduated from Cornell’s College of Hotel Management. Bob managed the dormitories and food services at the University of Kansas before settling in Torrance, Calif., in 1954. At the time of his death, he was 73 and had been honored by the city of Los Angeles and the state of California for his outstanding service to the communities of Wilmington and San Pedro. While he owned his Terminal Insurance Company, San Pedro, he was an active member of the Rolling Hills United Methodist Church, past Vice President of the Peninsula Symphony Association, past President of the Wilmington Rotary Club (1971–1972), president of the Harbor Association of Life Underwriters, Chairman of the Wilmington Wisteria Festival (1972), sustaining member of the YMCA, President of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce (1977) and Chairman of the Mahar Advisory Board (1978). He also actively supported the Wilmington Teen Post #908, the Wilmington Boys and Girls Club, Wilmington Boys Athletic Association and the Banning High School Boosters.
Bob is survived by is wife Diane; daughter Lynne V. Ramsey; son Robert VanderMeid Jr.; stepdaughter Jennifer Longmire and brother, William and Edson VanderMeid and Edson VanderMeid of Livonia, New York.
Memorial Service for family and friends will be held Friday., Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church of Chula Vista, 276 F St.
