- Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. at the West Side District Cemetery for Taft resident Rex Herd Rhoten, 78. Pastor Mick McMahon of the West Hills Church of the Nazarene will officiate the service. Rex was born in Charity, Mo., Oct. 26, 1920 and he passed away at his residence on Jan. 1. He attended Taft area schools and graduated from Taft Union High School in 1939. Rex served in the U.S. Navy from 1940-46 and 1950 -52. He began his 34 year career with Chevron Oil Company in 1946. In 1948 Rex married Alma Haynes of Taft. Rex was dedicated to others through years of lay ministry of the Church of Nazarene, and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years traveling and enjoying family and friends. Rex is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alma Rhoten, and two daughters and their husbands, Kellie and Bob Self of Taft, and Kim and Tim Fitzsimmons of Quito, Ecuador; eight grandchildren; Mariah Tod, Heidi, Ryan, Toby, and Hubble Self of Taft, and Bethany, Matthew, and Andrew Fitzsimmons of Quito, Ecuador; three great grandchildren; Hunter, Austin, and Ryan Self Jr. of Taft. his two nieces and their husbands Judy and Phil Stephens of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lou Ann and Charles Harlow of Long Beach and his nephew, David Rhoten of Bakersfield. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Those who wish to pay their respects, may call at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Tuesday until 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m..
