- HEERS Roger Lee Heers, 66, of Fort George Island, passed away on December 5, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Roger was born in Hornell, New York on July 29, 1942 to the late Harold and Audrey (McMicheal) Heers. He served our country in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam from 1964-1968 and retired from the City of Jacksonville Housing Authority in 1996. Roger loved fishing, hunting, golfing, cooking and The Jacksonville Jaguars; holding season tickets since the inaugural season. He enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends and never met a stranger. He was a member of Heckscher Drive Baptist Church. Roger is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 41 years, Betty (Barnes) Heers; two sons, Eric and Daniel (Heather Taylor-Heers), one daughter, Meschell; one granddaughter, Cheryl Taylor-Heers; three brothers, Rick (Judy), Darryl (Pat), David; three sisters, Sandy (Bill) Hall, Susie (Marv) Drake and Debbie (Larry) Gluck and numerous nieces and nephews. Roger was cherished by his wife and children and will be missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, December 9 at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home located 4747 Main Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32206. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 10 at 10am at Heckscher Drive Baptist Church located at 6650 Heckscher Drive. Interment will follow services at Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers include, Phil Talamo, Jerry Patterson, Tom Gammon, Kevin Gordie, Patrick Caffrey and Derrick Edmondson; honorary pallbearers, Senior Men's Sunday School Class. Services are under the care and direction of Rev. Richard L. Heers and Rev. Gary Poplin.
