- MRS. HARRY A. STALEY DIES; STRICKEN WHILE DRIVING CAR
Mrs. Edith May Staley, aged 49, of 10 South Chase street, suffered a stroke while driving her car yesterday morning and was taken to St. Mary’s hospital, Amsterdam, where she died at 11:30 A. M.
Wife of Harry A. Staley, stamp clerk at the postoffice, Mrs. Staley was stricken at about 9 on the Johnstown-Broadalbin road.
Mrs. Staley apparently felt the attack coming on for she pulled off to the side of the highway and stopped the car. She was assisted to a nearby farmhouse where Drs. William F. Hesk and John A. Shannon were called. She was then removed to the hospital.
Friends residing at the farm said she remarked that she felt ill and that she then slumped over the wheel. The end came unexpectedly for she had apparently been in her usual good health.
Word of her sudden passing came as a distinct shock to a large circle of friends who admired her many fine qualities.
She was born in Gloversville, February 28, 1901, the daughter of George and Nora Griffis, was a graduate of Gloversville High and New Paltz Normal school.
She taught school fifteen years in this city and Rotterdam Junction and was principal of the Irving street school here for five years before her retirement in 1937. Since that time she had done some substitute teaching.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and the Unity Class of that church, superintendent of the Junior Department of the Sunday school, also head of the Weekday Union Bible School of St. Paul’s, St. John’s, Baptist and Methodist churches.
The survivors are her husband, her parents in Gloversville, one brother, the Rev. Harold Griffis of Troy, and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The body was removed to the Barter funeral home. This afternoon it will be returned to the family home, where friends may call until Saturday morning.
At 2:30 that afternoon the funeral will be held from the funeral home with the Rev. Wilmer M. Zuehlke, pastor of St. Paul’s, officiating. Interment will be in Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville.
