- Carney Hollow.
Erhart Hamsher died at his home in Carney Hollow, Thursday afternoon of inflammation of the bowels. He had been working hard the week previous and it is thought he strained himself. Mr. Hamsher was a son of Conrad Hamsher, one of the old residents of Sparta, and he leaves a wife but no children. Funeral services were held Sunday.
In Memory of Erhart Hamsher
Gone from our home has the father so dear;
Gone, and has left us so lonely here,
While the absent form and vacant chair -
Tell of the sorrow so hard to bear.
Swiftly and sudden the messenger came,
Less than a week of anguish and pain,
Patient and calm the suffering he bore,
Oh! can't it be we shall see him no more?
Down where the waves of the river roll high,
Sadly, and softly, we whispered goodbye,
Over the stream that was darker than night,
Quickly we saw him go out of sight.
Over the stream came the boatman so pale,
Came with a boat and snowy white sail;
Swiftly he bore him over the foam,
Gone has the dear on, gone from our home.
Ne'er to return in his sociable way,
Much we shall miss the kind words he would say.
Lonely and sad is the home that he left.
Ties have been sundered and hearts are bereft.
Soon will the shadows of earth life be passed,
Sorrow and sighing be over at last;
Soon we shall meet in the mansions of day.
Go where our dear ones will ne'er fade away.
