Name James Lockwood Birth 15 Jul 1722 Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut
Gender Male Death Abt 1778 Westchester County, New York
Notes - James Lockwood married on September 5, 1741, at Stamford, Mary Norton, daughter of Hugh Norton.
On September 9, 1741, James Lockwood was appointed administrator of the estate of his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Norton, replacing Thomas Skelding, deceased. Nathaniel Norton’s will was dated October 4, 1740, and probated at Stamford on September 5, 1741—the same date as James and Mary’s marriage.
James Lockwood and his wife Mary were residing in Stamford on January 4, 1743/4, when they sold land there—property inherited from her brother Nathaniel Norton, originally belonging to their father Hugh Norton—to William King of Stamford. By November 27, 1755, however, they were living in Pound Ridge, where they acknowledged the transfer; the deed was recorded November 29, 1755 (Stamford Deeds F:164).
James had earlier received 25 acres of land in Stamford from his father, Joseph Lockwood, “for love,” on March 10, 1739/40 (Stamford Deed D:191). He later sold this land to his “brothers” (i.e., half-brothers), Israel and John Lockwood of Stamford, in two transactions:
- November 16, 1743 (while James was still residing in Stamford)
- February 4, 1744/5 (when he was of North Castle)
(Stamford Deeds D:403 and D:496)
On May 30, 1774 (recorded June 25, 1776), James Lockwood of the Manor of Cortlandt conveyed land to John Ambler of the same place, part of Farm #2 in Great Lot #10 (Westchester Land Records H:117).
James Lockwood served on the Cortlandt Manor Committee on April 2, 1777, which heard charges against William Wallace of Salem (BB, p. 64).
He does not appear on the 1779 Westchester County tax list (T-5:80), suggesting he likely died between 1777 and 1779. No death record or place of burial has been identified. Neither James nor his wife Mary appears in the 1790 census of New York or Connecticut. - February 4, 1744/5 (when he was of North Castle)
