- Jacob mar. Elizabeth (Betsey) Swarts Aug. 28, 1850, Sparta, Livingston Co, NY. Jacob, son of John George and Barbara Dotterer Dieter and Betsey, daughter of Jacob and Marcia Getts Swarts. Jacob and Betsey had 3 children: Josephine, Exielona and Emmarilla all born before Jacob was in the Civil War.
In their childhood, and a short time before their marriage Jacob and Betsey lived in Sparta but before 1855 they settled on a 40 acre farm on the Swarts Road in Springwater. Jacob was a carpenter by trade and there were many barns still standing in 1933 which he built before 1861. Among them was a large basement barn on his farm, the first ever to be built in that part of the country. with a straw shed to house the straw before it could be used for feed. Farmers came for miles around to see this barn. (Lloyd Moose's Hist. Story Rd.).
Jacob enlisted in Co. B, 136th Reg't of NY Vol. on its original organization at Sparta, NY for a term of 3 years (age 34, 5 ft 11 1/2 inches tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, a farmer). He died in Rebel Prison, Richmond, VA., March 29, 1864. Jacob was captured at Bristow Station on Sept. 11, 1863, confined at Richmond, VA., in Rebel prison (Libby). He was admitted to the hospital Feb. 12, 1864, where he died March 28, 1864 of bronchitis, age 35.
Betsey remained on the farm until her death when it passed to her dau., Exie Dieter Joy. After being passed down several times through the family, the farm was finally sold in 1958 so the old home was in the family more than 100 years. (Ref. Winnie Perkins).
Jacob's widow tried to have his body returned home for burial but it could not be recovered because the graves wre not marked. There is a monument where Betsey is buried with a detailed account of Jacob on it, along with the inscription for Betsey.
