Notes |
- Benjamin Sweeten died at the home of his brother in Pittsford on Sunday, aged 71 years. He was born in Springwater in 1838, raised a farmer and always followed that occupation until a year ago when he sold his farm in the town of Mt. Morris where he had lived many years, since which time he had made his home with his brother. Two weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis which affected nearly all his body and he was unable to speak.
Mr. Sweeten enlisted in August, 1863, in Co. E, One Hundred Thirty-Sixth N.Y.V., and served faithfully for seven months when he was given an honorable discharge for a disability incurred in the service. He was a member of Seth N. Hedges Post and always took an active interest in its affairs, never being absent from a meeting or a gathering if he was close enough to attend. He was a man of singularly cheery disposition, always seeing the funny things in life and by his laugh imparting cheer to others. He had an extensive acquaintance in Springwater where he lived several years and also in Mt. Morris and in Dansville, and he was of such a sociable nature that he never failed to call on his friends whenever he visited in these places. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Orville Moose of this village and Mrs. Miles Amos of Springwater and a brother, Amos Sweeten in Pittsford. His wife who was Miss Selina Harris of Springwater died fifteen years ago. The remains were brought to the home of his daughter on Quay street Monday night and funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. W.R. Brown to officiate and the Grand Army services to be conducted at the grave.
