In 1826, Daniel Burditt is listed as head of Family with three children enrolled in School District 4 and his brother Abner had one child enrolled. In 1835, Daniel had 6 children enrolled in School District 8 - formerly part of District 4.
(Question: Was Joshua Burditt involved in the lumber industry? We know that he married, at the age of 66, in 1834 in Rutland Co. We know that his son Daniel - born in 1795 - married in 1816 in Rutland Co. The family must have have moved to Vermont from New Hampshire around this time.)
Milling was Shrewsbury's largest industry. The Burditt family operated several mills in the northern part of Shrewsbury. Various members of the family participated in the sawmill industry for over fifty years. William Kilburn owned a sawmill and a gristmill at the junction of Lower Cold River Road and the Wilmouth Hill Road and in 1834 sold the mills to John Buckmaster who deeded them to Daniel Burditt in 1835. (Note: It would be very interesting to find out why this was deeded.) Daniel died in 1850. The mills might have been passed down to the eldest son, Sylvester but he died in 1851. There is no mention of Darius, the next son in line, having inherited the mills. However, the mills did remain in the family until Lowell Jay, Daniel's third son, sold it to Horace G. Hewitt for $312.00 in 1852. By 1860 Rodney Burditt, Lowell's younger brother, had taken over the operation. (The book doesn't say how it returned to the Burditt family) The Burditt Mills manufactured lumber and chair stock. Burditt also ran the sawmill located about 1/8 of a mile west of the Shrewsbury line on the Old Plymouth Road. In 1880 Burditt employed twelve men and milled 2,000,000 feet of lumber annually as well as chair stock. (Note: in the photograph of the Burditt Mill employees, there are far more than twelve men photographed.)
The records for School District 13 or The Union District (Old Plymouth Road Area) indicates that repairs to the school house were to be shared by both Shrewsbury and Plymouth, each paying half the cost not to exceed $150.00. The school population had risen with an influx of lumbermen. In 1896, Mr. E.A. Burditt, owner of the nearby mill, was called upon to contribute twenty-five dollars towards the repairs.
(Note: could this be Elroy Allan Burditt, son of Rodney Burditt....he would have been about 38 years old.)
