Alma Jean Haynes was born in Taft on June 26, 1928. She graduated from Taft Union High School in 1946 and married the love of her life, Rex Rhoten in 1948. Alma was a dedicated wife and mother, loved Jesus and served faithfully in the Taft Church of the Nazarene for many years. She always seemed to find the best in people and found great joy in selfless service to others. Her signature Sunday supper at the Rhoten house has brought great joy to many family and friends throughout the years. From the 1950s to the 1970s she touched many children's lives as she provided home child care. In the 1970s Alma started working in the warehouse at Santa Fe Energy where she touched many lives with her pleasant smile and dedication to work. In her retirement she has enjoyed family, grandchildren and travel. Alma enjoyed playing the piano and organ, embroidery, knitting and watching ice skating and baseball. She loved to be with family and especially cherished her time with all the grandchildren. Alma also opened her home for weekly Bible studies and in recent years volunteered at the West Kern Oil Museum. A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Rodney Wikoff and Bob Self will officiate the celebration of Alma's life. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Rhoten to the West Hills Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be on Friday, July 26, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
